Doctors: Flu season only beginning in MI

Seven states and Puerto Rico are experiencing moderate flu activity.

In January 2018, Governor Cuomo signed an emergency executive order allowing pharmacists to administer flu vaccines to children ages 2 to 18 during the 2018 flu season.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is urging New Yorkers to get the flu shot as soon as possible ahead of the flu season's peak. That's an increase from the previous week, when two states, Colorado and Georgia, experienced high flu activity.

"This is a very sad reminder that flu is unpredictable and can be deadly", Julie Vaishampayan, MD, a public health officer with the county, said in a statement.

Influenza A viruses have been dominating in the United States since the beginning of October, the CDC said, although influenza B viruses are circulating, as well. There have been 11 total flu-related deaths among children in the 2018-2019 season.

The flu causes an often severe fever.as well as headaches and coughing. That severity may have raised many people's awareness, Duncan theorized. People 65 years and older and also young children are highly susceptible to the disease and the CDC and OSDH highly recommend getting flu vaccinations. When treatement is started within days of becoming sick, antiviral drugs can lessen symptoms and hasten recovery, and reduce complications and hospitalizations. Instead, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Donald Lawrenchuk tells WHMI that despite the recent flu-related death in MI, it's not too late to get your flu shot.

The CDC says the good news is all of the viruses they've tested appear to be susceptible to vaccines and treatment.
