The G20 summit has taken place every year for the past 10 years, to discuss world affairs.

The divisions among the world's leading economies were evident from the moment the Argentine president opened the summit Friday with a call for worldwide cooperation to solve the planet's problems.

"But I will tell you that I think China wants to make a deal".

The Group of 20 Summit of global leaders in Buenos Aires, Argentina opened on Friday under various political and economic clouds.

Officials familiar with the meeting's planning said Trump himself determined Navarro, who flew to Argentina about Air Force One on Thursday, should attend.

"That was in my civilian days", Trump said.

Growing concerns that the trade war will increasingly hurt corporate earnings and the USA economy are a key reason why US stock prices have been sinking this fall.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly about the closed-door discussions.

Xi and other leaders from the BRICS group of leading emerging economies - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - issued a statement calling for open global trade and a strengthening of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Speaking to reporters at the White House, he said that while China was interested in striking a deal, "I don't know if I want to do it" and "I like the deal we have now".

Following hopes that a deal would be made between the two countries, United States stocks closed higher on Friday.

In February, President Trump hosted Malcolm Turnbull during a visit to the White House. Their declaration was meant to encourage other G-20 members to do the same, and to provide a boost for an upcoming United Nations climate summit.

With Argentina at the helm this year, the two-day global forum is set to focus on the future of work, infrastructure for development and a sustainable food future. -China trade war, and is more likely an indication that the conflict is set to intensify, rather than deescalate.

"As this is a hard moment for worldwide cooperation, I would like to appeal to the leaders to use this summit.to seriously discuss real issues such as trade wars, the tragic situation in Syria and Yemen and the Russian aggression in Ukraine", Tusk told a news conference.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said she would be robust when she talks to Prince Mohammed, urging him to hold a full and credible investigation into Khashoggi's killing.

Bin Salman told Macron not to worry, but Macron countered, "I am anxious". Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler arrived under swirling controversy over the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.

It is to be bin Salman's first significant appearance overseas since the killing.

Trump's aides hoped a signing ceremony for the recently struck United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement would act as a centerpiece of the trip, and they scheduled an event for Friday morning.

Trump was attacked for destroying the group's past unity on trade and climate change.

And the deal: "which we think is unlikely in the near term, would involve complete rollback of the current tariffs".

Trade agreements should "move along with the economy", Pena Nieto said. Persistent disputes with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - including over USA steel and aluminum tariffs - led to questions about who precisely from the Canadian side would be doing the signing.

Trump abruptly cancelled a planned meeting with President Vladimir Putin, citing Russia's recent seizure of three Ukrainian ships, but remains billed to dine with President Xi Jinping on Saturday after igniting a trade war with China. But Merkel's government plane suffered technical problems en route, and she was forced to turn back to Cologne.

He also met Argentinian Senate president Federico Pinedo, Buenos Aires Senator Esteban Bullrich, Santa Fe national deputy Astrid Hummel, and other Argentinian Congress members.

The demonstrators included bare-breasted women who had G20 flags painted on their chests. As a result, the Macri administration is seeking to mitigate any diplomatic issues between the South American country and Beijing caused by Huckabee Sanders's words, website Pagina 12 reported.

Argentine authorities have said they will not tolerate violence or allow the gathering to be disrupted.
