'As I told his wife, he died a hero; he went into save lives, to save other people, ' he said.
"He made it through Las Vegas, he came home".
Within minutes he was at the Borderline Bar & Grill with a CHP officer. He died in an area hospital Thursday morning. "A friend yelled, 'Everybody down!' We were hiding behind tables trying to keep ourselves covered".
"First thing I said was 'Please don't drink and drive.' Last thing I said was 'Son, I love you'".
It was the second mass shooting in America in less than two weeks.
Only 10 days ago a gunman killed 11 worshipers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. He ordered flags flown at half-staff in honor of the victims.
Long used a.45 caliber Glock handgun, which was purchased legally, Dean said.
Helus was immediately hit with multiple gunshots, Dean said.
The killer also deployed a smoke device, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
As for why he attacked the bar, "there's no indication that he targeted the employees".
"We have not found any type of assault rifle inside the location", he said. "We have no idea what the motive was at this point", Dean said.
Police identified the gunman as Ian Long, a 28-year-old former Marine who is one of the 12 dead.
The sheriff's department had several previous contacts with Long including a call to his home in April when deputies found him acting irate and irrationally.
"Some of his girlfriends got out but they didn't know where Cody was, I'm sure he was there helping, shielding anybody that he could".

Hanson described Long as an introvert and said he was "dumbfounded" by the massacre.
The gunman was dressed in a black trench coat and wearing glasses when he walked into the bar filled with people enjoying a night of line dancing.
Officials said that shots were still being fired when the first officers arrived at the scene.
He added that Helus was a "hard-working, dedicated Sheriff's Sergeant". The highway patrolman cleared the perimeter and pulled Helus out.
"He went in there to try to save people", Sheriff Dean said in a news conference.
The shooting, which also killed a law enforcement officer, took place at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California. Some men ran toward them and said the gunman was coming.
"I saw the shots go off, although I didn't really see the guy", she said. "And we feel for the people involved, that it happened to". She said she hid with a group of strangers and they were holding hands.

On Wednesday night, students gathered for college country night between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the bar's website. "That's the stuff I'm truly going to miss", he said.
"I was actually about to leave when you start hearing pop, pop, pop".
"We must find a way to stop the senseless, and many times preventable killings that are robbing our country of innocent lives", he tweeted.
California Lutheran University canceled classes Thursday following the shooting.

Chandler Gunn, 23, of Newberry Park called a friend who works at the bar who was also at the Route 91 shooting in Vegas.
"It's there", Mr Coffman told CNN.
There were hundreds of people in the bar when the attack began. Helus was a 29 veteran of the force who had planned to retire in the next year.
