When asked where Bryant might fit best a few months ago, Cowboys' quarterback Dak Prescott called it.
Bryant retweeted a person congratulating him on landing with the Saints, who lost receiver Ted Ginn Jr. for the year. When he's targeted in the red zone, he knows how to come down with the ball, and the Saints already had some great red zone weapons in Mark Ingram, Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, and company.
The 30-year-old Bryant spent his first eight years in the National Football League with Dallas and last season caught 69 passes for 838 yards and six touchdowns, including a 50-yard scoring play, for the Cowboys. For his career, Bryant has posted 531 catches, 7,459 yards and a whopping 73 touchdowns. But his play fell off dramatically previous year when he failed to register a single 100-yard game. He previously met with the Browns and Ravens. It's unclear what his role will be in New Orleans.
Bryant visited New Orleans on Monday, working out with fellow wideouts Brandon Marshall and Kamar Aiken.
"Each week we'll have different players in different spots, tight ends, running backs, but you're asking a question, I think, based on the other reports, so I'll get to the next question", Saints head coach Sean Payton told beat reporters Wednesday morning, shortly before word leaked of Bryant's imminent signing. We may or may not sign a receiver. From the people who love this game, who've played, they can understand that about it being somewhat harder for other people to figure that out.
But here's the thing: the other guys aren't playing that well.
Basically, Cowherd believes New Orleans saw the success Gordon has had since joining New England and decided it was worth rolling the dice on Bryant, another polarizing ex-Pro Bowl wide receiver with both baggage and upside. Last season, Bryant caught 69 passes, including six touchdowns, for a grand total of 838 yards and was tied for third in the league in dropped passes.
New Orleans also has two games remaining against division rival Carolina (6-2). Similarly, the team understood that a solid defense could key on Thomas in the postseason and leave them fighting with one hand.
