Comparing one who doesn't exercise regularly with top performers the risk was 390% higher. What food you eat, what habits you adopt or drop, and even how much sleep you get can have serious impacts on your wellbeing, but a new study by cardiologists reveals that of all the things you can do that might negatively impact your health, a sedentary lifestyle is the most deadly.
Jaber said researchers must now convey the risks to the general population that "being unfit should be considered as strong of a risk factor as hypertension, diabetes and smoking - if not stronger than all of them".
The findings, he said, were by far the most "pronounced" and "objective" ever seen and were 'extremely surprising'.
"Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are the most expensive diseases in the United States".
Other research has found that any amount of regular exercise will help you out in the long run, not just in prolonging your life but improving the quality of those last days. "Rather than pay huge sums for disease treatment, we should be encouraging our patients and communities to be active and exercise daily", said Dr. Jordan Metzl, sports medicine physician at the Hospital for Special Surgery and author of the book "The Exercise Cure".
A new study may give people some motivation to hit the gym. So, there's no level of exercise that is a risk.
When the subgroups were analyzed by age, the survival benefit of elite versus high performance was most notable in older patients.
However, according to the study, individual patients should always check with their healthcare provider before starting an exercise programme. This is several times greater than the risk of dying from Smoking, diabetes, heart diseases and even fatal diseases in the last stages.
"People who do not perform very well on a treadmill test", Jaber said, "have nearly double the risk of people with kidney failure on dialysis".
When compared to people with the lowest fitness, the authors estimated, elite fitness was associated with an 80 percent reduction in mortality risk.
Meanwhile, those that didn't do well on the treadmill test were said to have nearly two times the health risks as those with kidney failure on dialysis.
Cardiorespiratory fitness is the ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen to skeletal muscles during sustained physical activity. "Sedentary, Western lifestyles have lead to a higher incidence in heart disease and this shows that it's modifiable". Doctors have become good at treating patients with prescriptions for the symptoms of CVD, but these events can be treated.
