'Missing' head of Interpol under investigation in China

He was last seen in Lyon, France, which is the headquarters of the global police organization.

French police said earlier they had launched a search for Meng after being contacted by his wife, news agencies reported.

Meng's disappearance is being investigated by French police, according to media citing police sources.

Meng's term is set to run until 2020.

During a speech at the 86th Interpol General Assembly in Beijing in September 2017, Meng talked about the importance of worldwide cooperation and combating cybercrime.

Interpol's website notes that Meng previously served as Vice Minister of Public Security in his native China.

At the time, human rights organizations such as Amnesty International expressed concerns that Beijing could use Interpol to arrest dissidents and refugees overseas.

"This is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China", Interpol's press office said in a statement, adding that the organisation's secretary general, not Meng, was responsible for the day-to-day running of Interpol.

He was the first Chinese leader of Interpol, which connects the law enforcement agencies of its 192 member countries. In Beijing, the foreign and public security ministries did not immediately respond to calls and faxed requests for comment Friday.
