A blockbuster primary in Florida and three-way fight in Arizona

Shadowed by the death of six-term Sen.

In Florida, a key election battleground, Republican voters in a primary for governor chose a Trump loyalist, Ron DeSantis, even though polls suggest that...

The race is to succeed retiring Sen.

Republicans are trying to defend the seat vacated by retiring GOP senator Jeff Flake, whose persistent criticism of Trump made him unpopular with conservative voters. McCain died Saturday after a yearlong battle with brain cancer. But Democrats were in a festive mood, as results showed that voter turnout, usually damp in mid-term elections, had edged up by around 5 per cent according to Ms Felecia Rotellini, the party's state chairman.

Trump reiterated his support for DeSantis on Twitter Monday, calling the congressman a "special person" who is "Strong on Crime, Borders and wants Low Taxes".

While Ward and Arpaio had trumpeted their hardline stances on immigration and their support for their president throughout the race, McSally had drawn comparisons to the more moderate, recently deceased Arizona Sen.

During the Republican primary, the candidates exchanged vicious insults while highlighting their closeness to the president.

Dr Hilal Tipirneni, an Indian-American Democrat who sailed through her primary for a Congressional district unopposed, told The Straits Times: "The base is very energised". The CNN survey found that 67 percent of Democrats had a favorable opinion of McCain, while just 33 percent of Republicans had a favorable view of the GOP senator. The seat formerly held by Sen.

McSally began her victory speech with a moment of silence for McCain. Kelli Ward, who lost to McCain in a 2016 primary, and former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the 86-year-old immigration hawk once convicted of criminal contempt of court but pardoned by Trump.

Arpaio, who was pardoned by Trump previous year after being found in criminal contempt of court for continuing his immigration sweeps for 17 months after a judge ordered him to stop, found himself embroiled in a new batch of controversy.

McSally, a fighter pilot turned congresswoman in the McCain mold, is hoping Ward and Arpaio split Arizona's anti-establishment vote. That could make it harder for her to win in November, when she is expected to face Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema in a blue-wave year. After McCain's death, Sinema and Ward suspended their campaigns for Wednesday and Thursday.

Democrats are also eyeing pickup opportunities in Florida as they try to flip control of the House.

Voters elected U.S. Reps. Bill Clinton was the last Democratic presidential nominee to carry Arizona in 1996. But Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, the favorite of the in-state GOP establishment, has done his best Trump impression, with broadsides against "fake news" and dubbing himself an "NRA sellout". But Trump's surprise endorsement of DeSantis in December appears to give the congressman an edge heading into Tuesday's contest. "It's up to all of us to follow his lead of always putting country over party", the Democrat said.

"This is how I see this campaign", McSally said. The latest example in Jacksonville - when we think it's over, something else happens. Cornett is running on his government experience, while Stitt has campaigned as the outsider, self-funding his campaign and hitting Cornett for not supporting Trump enough.
