The 57-year-old, who participated on Trump's reality TV show, "The Celebrity Apprentice", said the White House thanked him for his role in reaching out to North Korea.
"Dennis Rodman was either drunk or on drugs (delusional) when he said I wanted to go to North Korea with him. I was sitting up protecting everything", he said. I believed in North Korea and when I came home I couldn't even go home. "If Trump goes there with his great heart, with his heart on the table, if he can let Kim see him really emotional, it will show that he's trustworthy as well", Rodman said, "It doesn't have to be about war, what happened in the past, about hatred, or how the future will be". "And Obama did not give me the time of day", he said.
"I think the leaders made a good statement today just shaking hands, the main thing is to try and accomplish trust", Rodman told Channel NewsAsia at the Regent Hotel in Singapore. I had no one to hear me, no one to see me, but I knew it. "I'm so happy", wiping away tears from beneath a large pair of black sunglasses.
He is one of the few westerners to have met the North Korean leader on visits to the capital city Pyongyang. "This guy wants to be around the world, he wants to go to America". "And Kim Jong-un came to me and said: "Dennis - you know what this is the first time someone has ever kept their word to me and my country".
In 2014, Trump tweeted dismissively about the possibility that he and Rodman would someday travel to North Korea together.
"I asked him, I said 'I have something to say from North Korea, ' and he just brushed be off", Rodman said.
Trump felt he didn't need to do a lot of prep, because of his own nature, but also because Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the President of South Korea had already met with Kim multiple times.
The US President told reporters he expect he'll have "a terrific relationship with" the North Korean leader.
Rodman said Kim, who was educated in Switzerland, "understands bits and pieces", of English.
"I think that country is normally hearing people who are always lying, deceitful and not trustworthy".
Former basketball player Dennis Rodman arrives at Changi Airport in Singapore, June 12, 2018. "We need the doors to be open and start fresh and make this world a better place, baby, that's it".
