THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Cashing in on the split verdict in the Karnataka elections, Kerala grabbed the headlines in the social media on Tuesday with Kerala Tourism tweeting a text from its official Twitter handle, inviting all MLAs in Karnataka to unwind at the safe and handsome resorts in the state, which is famous for its pristine beaches, serene backwaters, historic sites and monuments, lush green forests, thriving wildlife and traditional art forms. The Kerala Tourism department had extended the invitation through its official twitter handle.
- However, later in the day the BJP's numbers dropped giving it the position of the single largest party, but falling short of a clear majority.
In a Tweet, they posted,"After the rough and tumble of the #KarnatakaVerdict, we invite all the MLAs to unwind at the safe & handsome resorts of God's Own Country". JD (S) leader HD Kumaraswamy has, however, staked claim to form government with what the Congress called its "unconditional support".
The CPI (M) in its recent party congress in Hyderabad had agreed to-after much dispute among leaders-to work toward a "political understanding" with the Congress to defeat the BJP.
Till the filing of the story on Tuesday the tweet had got 5515 retweets and 9041 likes. Keeping that in mind, neighbouring state Kerala took a dig at MLAs from Karnataka.
However, it may not just have been merely a marketing strategy to sell Kerala's beaches and hills in Karnataka, a state which made "resort" politics a staple in India's history. Congress took the early lead in the morning from the earliest trends as the day continued to progress BJP came from behind and overtook Congress. Now that the political situation is precariously poised in Karnataka, there are talks that the BJP may approach the JD (S) and Congress MLAs, and cajole them to switch sides.
