Summit with Kim Jong Un will be in Singapore on June 12

U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that his meeting with North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un would take place in Singapore on June 12.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday, Trump eliminated the demilitarized zone on the inter-Korean border as a potential location for the talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. "We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!".

USA partners in the Iran nuclear agreement have already signaled they aren't eager to return to the negotiating table and craft the new deal Trump wants.

Welcoming the three Americans at a military base outside Washington early Thursday, Trump said of Kim, "I really think he wants to do something". The three men, Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak Song and Kim Sang Duk, also known as Tony Kim, met with President Trump early Thursday morning after landing at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

"We're not under any illusions about who these people are".

Shinzo Abe said in a televised interview that Kim should understand that agreements with the United States and South Korea on better relations and denuclearization are not enough to win Japanese aid, and that the abductees must be released.

China has welcomed the upcoming summit of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and U.S. leaders in Singapore on June 12, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said on Friday.

Remarkable images of the two leaders greeting each other warmly over the Military Demarcation Line that splits their countries, rich with symbolism and high political theatre, were broadcast around the world.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to North Korea to secure the prisoner's release.

Former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter visited after leaving office, multiple rounds of non-proliferation talks have taken place, and a deal was even signed in 1994.

It was Mr Pompeo's second visit to North Korea this week that pushed through the release.

Singapore is the likely site for the historic meeting, late this month or in early June, and Pompeo says it would last one day and possibly a second.

In December Kim declared his nuclear force as complete following the country's most powerful nuclear test to date in September and also three flight tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles created to reach the U.S. mainland.

Though he did break with tradition to move the US embassy to Jerusalem, the White House plan bogged down and the divide between Israelis and Palestinians seems as intractable as ever, prompting Trump's attention shift to North Korea.

So far, the North Korean regime has made vague pledges to "denuclearize" but has not spelled out what that means, when it would happen or how it would be implemented.

Trump, for his part, will not take well to anything that is "step by step", so he will seek shortcuts to achieving something that resembles his stated objective.

He went on to thank Chinese President Xi, adding, "He was very helpful to us two days ago on something very specific", without elaborating.

Washington has demanded Pyongyang give up chemical and biological weapons, in addition to nuclear weapons and programs. "If he doesn't see material progress to that, there's not going to be a deal for a deal's sake", she said.

Trump and his team also believe that his bold tactics have the added benefit for Trump of overshadowing the threats his administration faces from the ongoing Russian Federation probe and the legal web surrounding his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, and porn actress Stormy Daniels.

While some White House aides characterized Trump's moves as evidence of bold thinking, there is also concern that he has little sense of the potential repercussions from some of his big moves, believing that if things don't work out, that he can always just reverse course. One possibility is that he will confront Kim on North Korea's fluid definition of "denuclearization".
