A SC prison spokesman reported Monday morning that seven inmates are dead and 17 others were injured after a brawl broke out inside Lee Correctional Institution.
Prisons spokesman Jeff Taillon said State Law Enforcement Division agents were required to help secure Lee Correctional Institution at 3am local time on Monday (8am in the UK). They say the incident began around 7:15 pm Sunday and involved multiple inmate-on-inmate altercations in three housing units. EMS crews from Florence County, Kershaw County, Lexington County and Hartsville also responded.
Lee is a maximum-security prison that houses 1,600 inmates, including some of the state's most violent offenders, reports the State. One inmate killed another in February this year. Four inmates were killed by a pair of prisoners in the state's Kirkland Correctional Institution previous year.
