Authorities say a man is under arrest in connection with the homicide of a college student from Long Island, 22-year-old Haley Anderson.
Commissioner Francisco Díaz of the Nicaraguan National Police said in a press conference Tuesday afternoon that Tercero was apprehended and transferred to the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, also know as El Chipote, in Managua, Nicaragua, El Nuevo Diario reported.
Friends of the 22-year-old nursing school student contacted city police Friday afternoon when they had been unable to contact Anderson.
Further information regarding Tercero's arrest was not immediately available. The circumstances surrounding her death have not been revealed. Tercero allegedly "fled the United States via global air to Nicaragua prior to the discovery of Haley Anderson's deceased body", according to a statement released by police. Authorities suspected that he left the country by "international air travel", according to a statement by police. Tercero flew to Nicaragua before police found the victim's body, authorities said. Anderson, a nursing student at the State University of NY at Binghamton, was from Westbury, Long Island. She lived about a mile away from the SUNY Binghamton campus, officials said, and worked as a barista at a local cafe in Binghamton, according to her LinkedIn profile.
