Reports from Spain have claimed that Enrique remains Chelsea's number one target to replace Conte - who's relationship with the Blues board continues to deteriorate. Vermaelen could start against Chelsea on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge.
Former Chelsea defender Albert Ferrer believes that Luis Enrique would be a ideal fit should he end up replacing Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge. The former Celta Vigo manger has been without a club since March previous year, and could be ready to end his sabbatical with a new challenge in the Premier League at the start of the 2018/19.
"As a coach, he wants his teams to be aggressive, to be committed. I think he would fit in perfectly (at Chelsea), and there are already several Spanish players there".
"It's true that speaking English is important, above all to try and transmit your ideas, but Lucho has been learning (English)", he added.
Would Enrique enjoy success in the Premier League?
Enrique delivered the Champions League, two La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey crowns at Barcelona after previously coaching Roma and Celta Vigo. Vermaelen, who was signed by Enrique in 2014 praised the Spaniard and asserted that he can easily flourish like Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in the Premier League.
"I think it's similar to what you're seeing with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City", Thomas Vermaelen was quoted as saying by the Guardian.
Antonio Conte is not expected to last the summer, his Pensioners finding themselves so far from leaders Chelsea that their current objective is to stay in the Top 4, with Spurs only one point behind.
