Ice jam concerns raised as rain, warmth and snow are forecast

Update: Friday evening, the National Weather Service canceled the flood advisory for northwestern Cuyahoga County.

Also, due to recent very cold temperatures, rivers and streams across the area have rapidly accumulated ice cover and the possibility for flooding due to ice jams has increased substantially, Taylor said.

"While the highest rainfall amounts are now expected to occur just offshore, this may change over the next few days", the NWS email blast said.

Nearly three inches of rain has been reported in areas north of Pittsburgh, including Bell Acres and Nixon which measured 2.92 inches and 2.82 inches, respectively.

One in March 2011 caused numerous evacuations in Johnsburg and Chester, while roads have been closed for weeks when huge chunks of ice flow out of the river.

Flooding in western NY was also reported Friday morning with houses surrounded by water in parts of south Buffalo.

A flood warning means flooding is imminent or occurring. Baxter State Park could get half a foot of snow. Chance of precipitation is 80%, but little or no snow or ice accumulation is expected.

Heavy rain is expected to move into the tri-town Friday and Saturday, with totals between 1.5-3 inches expected.

In addition, Winter Storm Hunter is spreading snow, sleet, ice and rain into the East.

The combination of the rainfall, snowmelt and the potential for snow-clogged storm drains could result in some urban, poor-drainage and small-stream flooding. Temperatures on Saturday morning will start off in the 50s, but come early afternoon, they'll dip down below freezing across western and northern MA.

The extreme cold of the last few weeks has created a massive amount of river ice so far this winter, and temperatures that could top 50 degrees combined with up to 2 inches of rain could cause significant ice jam problems on rivers like the Hudson and Schroon.
