Two suspects have been arrested in conncection with the killing of Shiv Sena leader Ashok Sawant in Kandivali, a suburb of Mumbai. Sawant, a two-time corporator from Samta Nagar, is the brother of assistant police commissioner Subhash Sawant, who is attached to the anti-terrorism squad. The police officials reached the spot and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.
Police arrived at the scene of the crime and collected samples for forensic examination, and are also examining whether there were any CCTVs near the scene of the crime. Although the preliminary motive behind the crime appeared to be extortion, further investigation in the case is still underway.
The body was sent to Bhagwati Hospital for Postmortem.
According to reports, Sawant had been receiving extortion calls over the past few days after he entered a cable business and that he had raised the matter with the police as well.
According to the police the assailants came in a vehicle and attacked Deepak while he was on the way to his workplace and attacked him with sharp weapons. One of them is Jagga, a well-known criminal, said the source. All four suspects - Naushad Ullanje of Mulki, Rizwan, Pinky Nawaz and Nirshan - were taken to police custody.
