A California woman's premature labor on New Year's Eve resulted in her fraternal twins being born in different years.
Per the tradition of Delano Regional Medical Center, the first baby born in every new year is given lots of presents.
But at 11:58 p.m. December 31, just two minutes before the new year, Joaquin Ontiveros was born, weighing in at 5 pounds, 9 ounces and 18 inches long.
Aitana weighed in at 4 pounds, 10 ounces and 16 inches long. She was born 18 minutes after her brother at 12:16 a.m. - in the next year.
Doctors said the girl was slightly breached, so she had to be delivered via caesarean section.
Maria Ontiveros was due January 27, 2018, but went into labor around 7 p.m. December 31.
It was therefore quite a shock when she went into labour on New Year's Eve. The babies were said to have born healthy and hassle-free, with only the rarity of their birth timing.
Maria Flores and her brand new babies have already done a lot this year.
The unlikely event of a miracle birth like this also gifted their parents the opportunity to take home more than $3,000 worth of baby supplies, which were donated to the hospital by local community groups.
'It was definitely a surprise!
Maria and her husband Joaquin, both farm labourers, have three other daughters ranging in ages from 18 years old to six.
