Richardson has owned the team since it came into existence in 1995.
"The Carolina Panthers and Mr. Richardson take these allegations very seriously and are fully committed to a full investigation and taking appropriate steps to address and remediate any misconduct", team spokesman Steven Drummond said.
Some explosive news broke around the NFL Friday evening with reports that the Carolina Panthers were investigating owner and founder Jerry Richardson for alleged workplace misconduct (more on that here).
The team did not give any details about the allegations.
The NFL has reportedly retained outside counsel to investigate workplace misconduct allegations against Richardson.
The Panthers came under fire after announcing that one of their minority partners - former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles - would oversee a probe led by a Los Angeles-based law firm. However, the Panthers initially raised eyebrows around the National Football League world when they released a statement at the end of the workday on Friday that an investigation was being launched and that one of their own was leading the investigation.
McCarthy said the National Football League would hire an independent law firm to lead the investigation.
According to CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora, that's no longer the case.
Without more transparency about the nature of the allegations against Richardson, it's hard to say what exactly could be at stake for the Panthers owner. He has been the controlling owner of the Panthers since the franchise was founded in 1993.
