The woman, Lalitha Mahapatra, 25, and her partner Y Prakash, 28, have been arrested in connection with the incident which took place at SR Nagar in Hyderabad, Telangana, India.
No, the scene described above is not out of a horror film or a book.
A four-year-old girl sustained multiple burn injuries after her mother allegedly branded her with a hot frying pan at SR Nagar last week. Well, there's a back story to this entire incident. According to the SR Nagar police, the child's mother Lalitha was in a live-in relationship with Prakash.
On the morning of December 3, the couple took the child to Bharosa Centre, a support centre for women and children, where they claimed that they found the four-year-old abandoned at the Secunderabad Railway Station.
Fortunately, the girl survived. "She seems to have left or divorced her first husband and married Prakash", S R Nagar police station's inspector Md Waheeduddin said. A couple of days ago, Lalitha forcibly made her daughter sit on a hot pan that resulted in severe burns for the child. However, during verification, it was revealed that the child was being tortured by the couple and they wanted to get rid of her. But, this only complicated things for the couple.
However, Prakash was said to be opposed at having the child with them and had been harassing Lalitha to get rid of her.
On Saturday, they both took a badly-burnt Rupali to the Bharosa centre at Nampally saying that they came to admit an orphan, who they found on the streets.
The police filed a case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by risky weapons or means) and relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act against the couple based on a complaint from an official of the Telangana's (a state in southern India) child welfare department, the official stated.
Well, here's wishing her a speedy recovery and hoping that the accused get the punishment they deserve.
