Jets quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates knows why McCown is playing so well this season - and keeping backups Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg on the bench. Although McCown is now the starter, Bowles may end up turning to Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg if he starts to struggles against some of these AFC and NFC heavyweights to finish out the regular season.
The Jets' playoff aspirations took a serious hit Sunday when NY fell to short-handed Tampa Bay 15-10, despite the Buccaneers playing without quarterback Jameis Winston and wide receiver Mike Evans. The argument to look at Petty or Hackenberg would be about 2018 and the Jets getting an idea of what they want to do at the position in the future, but that's not an argument the Jets are making with six regular season games left to go. The bye week feels like a natural time to wonder if the Jets should turn to the younger quarterbacks, but Bowles threw cold water on that with his statements Monday. The head coach gave Petty a chance last season when the Jets were 3-9, but the Jets aren't quite there yet. Right now, the Jets are 4-6, having lost four of their last five games.
"I give my all to the role I'm in and, if that changes, I'll adjust accordingly", he said.
The quest for a playoff spot in the AFC isn't over for the New York Jets. He has 14 touchdown passes (his career high), eight interceptions, and a 93.7 quarterback rating that ranks 13th in the NFL. Chicago ran a similar scheme in 2013.
"Really, that number needs to be a lot higher, to be honest with you, in my opinion", McCown said. If that changes, then I will help as best I can in any way. He is completing a career-best 69 percent of his passes. I'm doing that as best I can.
"Obviously, we can always do better and want to do better". Last season, Bowles waited until the Jets got to nine losses before pulling the plug on Fitzpatrick, who played much worse than McCown has this season. "This is what I expect out of Josh, and I think he expects the same thing".
"More than anything, just hopefully to be there helping our team make a push to be there in the playoff hunt in the end, that's the key".
