The Ministry of Justice has confirmed the "incident" as prisoners have reportedly taken over an entire wing of HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire.
Specially trained officers, called tornado squads, have been dispatched to the prison in attempt to secure the area.
Long Lartin is a Category A prison, meaning it houses criminals who are seen as highly risky to the public.
A Prison Service spokesperson told the BBC there were no injuries to staff or prisoners.
A Prison Service spokesman said: 'We are now managing an ongoing incident at HMP Long Lartin.
The disturbance is just the latest incident in a series hitting prisons around the UK.
Trouble involving dozens of inmates at a maximum-security prison should be "ringing alarm bells" over cuts to staff, the Prison Governors Association (PGA) has warned.
The Category A prison in Worcestershire has a capacity of 622. Prisoners were reportedly confined to their cells for up to 24 hours a day.
