Woodland shoots bogey-free 67 to begin Tour Championship

Topeka-native Gary Woodland began the PGA's Tour Championship with a bogey-free round on Thursday.

Woodland shot a 67 and was (-3) with birdies on the 6th, 10th, & 18th. As of 3:17 p.m. CT he was tied for 2nd place with Russell Henley, Webb Simpson, and Brooks Koepka.

The victor of the FedExCup on Sunday receives $10 million.

A group of patrons were gathered just wide of the eighth fairway during the opening round at East Lake, where they got closer to the action than they expected when Jhonattan Vegas arrived at the tee. I like the way the course sets up. I can play my fade off most of the tees. He has not made many other headlines, but knows he can compete with anyone when his putter is hot.

"Whatever it is, I don't know and I would love to find out but having said that I shot 64 here a year ago on Sunday, so I am pretty confident I can repeat that effort this Sunday".

Spieth was relieved to end the day only three shots off the lead after starting, he said, by hitting several snap hooks.

"I feel like I'm having to bridge the gap". "The first four or five holes of the round I was all over the place".

"Three-under each round is going to be really solid around this course".

"It is something my caddy and I have looked at and even going into the Northern Trust a few weeks back and the Dell Technologies we discussed the fact we need to play better over Friday, Saturday and Sundays".
