Trump's confidants at the White House say that Priebus, who worked closely with Trump during his campaign, was never described by the president as completely loyal to him. For its part, the Trump administration, including the president, has been working for months to distance itself from Manafort.
Trump said August 10 that there was no bad blood between him and his attorney general, saying of his relationship with Sessions, "is what it is".
Trump ousted Priebus last month, replacing him with former Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly as his new chief of staff. While Priebus was apparently listed on Manafort's calendar that same day in June 2016, it is unknown if the two men met, the Times reported.
A spokesman for Paul Manafort said, "Mr. Manafort has consistently cooperated with law enforcement and other serious inquiries and did so on this occasion as well". "No, I'm not dismissing anybody", he told the media on Thursday. It is not clear whether Mr. Priebus ever delivered that message to Trump, the newspaper reported.
"I haven't given it any thought", said Trump, according to USA Today.
Mr. Priebus may also be able to help prosecutors verify crucial details about Mr. Trump's interactions with Mr. Comey. Investigators have also made contact with some of Manafort's business associates, Bloomberg reported.
Mueller is reportely probing whether President Trump obstructed justice by firing former FBI head James Comey
Trump was asked about the raid on Manafort's house August 10.
Mr. Comey said in his testimony to Congress that on February 14, Mr. Trump had Mr. Priebus, the attorney general, the vice president and other senior administration officials removed from the Oval Office after a counterterrorism briefing. I haven't spoken to him in a long time, but I know him.
Trump has denied asking Comey to drop the investigation of Flynn.
According to a source familiar with the investigation, Manafort was awoken by a group of armed FBI agents knocking on his bedroom door as they executed the warrant on July 26. The president said he was surprised to learn about the search, saying it was something federal authorities "very seldom" do.
John Dowd, Trump's attorney, underscored Trump's support for Mueller in a comment August 8. A spokesperson told ABC News, "Mr. Manafort is in the process of retaining his former counsel, Miller & Chevalier, to represent him in the office of special counsel investigation".
