The Yorkshire club's reported interest comes at a time when they are fending off huge interest in striker Chris Wood.
Immediate rumours were that the offer must have come from Burnley, given their desperate need for a new striker after the sale of Andre Gray to Watford, and the fact they have had a £12m offer already rejected.
Following today's 0-0 draw with Preston North End, local newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost reported on the Championship clash at Elland Road.
"Many bids can come, of course, he is a good striker".
"We know how much power the players have these days, if you look at Coutinho and what has happened", Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds.
Wood is sought after having an excellent season in the Championship last season where he fired Leeds to within touching distance of making the playoffs.
Southampton, Swansea, Brighton and Stoke have all been monitoring Wood and The Bleacher Report, an English football website, has also claimed West Bromwich Albion is interested in luring the New Zealander back to The Hawthorns.
The Waikato product scored in Leeds' 3-2 opening day win over Bolton Wanderers but could not find the target against Preston on Sunday.
