During a rally in Huntington, West Virginia, earlier this month, President Donald Trump praised law enforcement and immigration officials for cracking down on gang members, particularly MS-13. The bureau is crediting public assistance for his apprehension. The murder was allegedly part of an initiation into the global criminal gang Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13). "Gomez will now stand trial for his alleged involvement for a brutal murder, which took a young man from his family".
The FBI Washington Field Office's Violent Crimes Task Force, the Fairfax County Police Department's Gang Unit, and the Northern Virginia Gang Task Force coordinated the local search and arrest of Gomez, who will remain in custody pending extradition proceedings.
Gomez, a Honduran citizen with is in his late 20s or 30s and was in the US illegally, is suspected in the death of Julio Matute in Plainfield in May 2011. His age is unclear.
Gomez is believed to affiliated with the gang MS-13, as was his victim Julio Matute. Authorities say Matute was Gomez's friend, and allegedly was a member of the Plainfield Locos Salvatrucha crew, a New Jersey branch of the notorious criminal network. He was struck in the head numerous times with a baseball bat, had his throat cut, and was stabbed 17 times in the back with a screwdriver, the Federal Bureau of Investigation says. The co-conspirator was subsequently apprehended, charged, and found guilty for the Matute homicide.
