"This exquisite series has drawn universal acclaim and introduced Anne Shirley to an entirely new generation, reaching an audience of 4.5 million in Canada", Sally Catto, general manager of programming for CBC, said in a statement Thursday. The second season will see an increased episode order, with 10 episodes up from eight.
Emmy-winning producer-writer Moira Walley-Beckett of Breaking Bad fame created the series based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic novel Anne of Green Gables.
It is available to viewers outside of Canada on Netflix, where it premiered with the rebranded title Anne with an "E" in May. Geraldine James, R.H. Thomson, Corrine Koslo, Dalila Bela, Aymeric, Jett Montaz and Lucas Jade Zumann star alongside McNulty. Season 2 will add new characters and storylines, and continue to explore themes of identity, prejudice, feminism, bullying, gender parity and empowerment through the lens of its 14-year-old protagonist.
Season 2 will have an all-female writers room, led by returning showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett.
This season, Walley-Beckett will have help from an all-female writing crew, including Jane Maggs (Bellevue, Cardinal), Shernold Edwards (Haven, Sleepy Hollow), Kathryn Borel (American Dad), Amanda Fahey (Saving Hope, Mohawk Girls) and Naledi Jackson (21 Thunder).
