As of July 20, when the first positive batch was confirmed in the county, 163 batches of mosquitoes from Westchester were tested for West Nile virus by the state health department.
Citing the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the article goes on to say that despite the illness's ability to cause a range of symptoms and in some cases even death, most people who become infected by West Nile do not show any symptoms.
"Since mosquitos can carry disease such as West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus, we want to remind residents to take steps to prevent bites". The Health Officer added that the Health District's Vector-Borne Disease Prevention Program is providing support to the Gerlach GID's mosquito abatement activities. Clean, drain and cover pools or hot tubs if not in use. That also includes ensuring doors and windows have tight-fitting screens with no tears or openings, and to eliminate all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breathe.
Empty and refill bird baths at least once a week.
Fill tree holes with tar or cement.
Fix leaky outdoor faucets that leave puddles.
Unclog all gutters and drains.
Tips for repelling mosquitoes include wearing shoes and socks, long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535, according to label instructions.
Wear proper clothing and repellent if going outdoors when mosquitoes are active, especially in the early morning and evening.
