President taps Brownback as Religious Freedom Ambassador

Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, a doctor from suburban Kansas City who previously served in the State Legislature, is expected to take over as Governor if Brownback's nomination is confirmed by the Senate, the New York Times reported.

Former Virginia congressman Frank Wolf drafted the bill that created the ambassadorship for religious freedom in 1998. "On all these issues he's been there before nearly anybody else".

Brownback will oversee a staff of about 25 as the head of an office responsible for publishing an annual report on religious freedom in virtually every country in the world, along with a list of the countries that are the world's worst abusers. "Our prayers are with him".

Russell Moore also praised Brownback as "an outstanding choice". His religious devotion has led him to crusade for helping the poor in struggling nations.

The Kansas Republican Party also applauded the nomination, saying "Brownback's worldwide credibility for human rights, refugee and religious work will dramatically increase the ambassadorship's influence". Brownback was actively involved during the crisis in Darfur, traveling to that country and pushing for a genocide declaration.

"He has my prayers and pledge of full cooperation, and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead", Moore continued.

Brownback spokeswoman Melika Willoughby said the two-term Republican governor would hold a news conference on Thursday. LGBT rights group Equality Kansas said that his support for religious freedom has been a cover for bigotry.

The last person to hold the position was David Saperstein, a rabbi and attorney who held the post from January 2015 to January 2017.

President Donald Trump made the intent to nominate Brownback on Wednesday.

The ambassador serves as the United States' main spokesman for oppressed religious minorities around the globe.

Brownback is the second Kansan to take a post within the Trump administration, following former Congressman Mike Pompeo, who resigned in December to become the director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Several people declined to comment because they wanted to know more.

Moore's Kairos Company provided initial reactions from conservative evangelical leaders [see below]. Religious liberty is the number one human rights issue of our day and is now under siege in so many corners of the globe.

Kansas Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley of Topeka says Brownback's legacy will be the budget problems caused by income tax cuts the governor advocated. Yet so many people in our world don't have the freedom to freely share their faith, or freely accept the truth, or freely live out their faith without fear of persecution, imprisonment, and even death.

Sam Brownback will remain the governor of Kansas - for now. "I applaud his appointment, and I'll be praying for his success".
