I guess you're just going to have to take my word for it, but I had written my whole Play of the Day on why Valentina Shevchenko would beat Amanda Nunes right before the fight was canceled. The UFC 213 fight against Shevchenko was supposed to be a rematch, as Nunes won a fight against her at UFC 196 by unanimous decision.
"It felt like it was me against the world", Nunes said of fighting Rousey (via Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports). It is safe to say that she is preparing to go through hell to get her hands on that UFC gold. "That's one of the reasons everybody wants the belt".
But the loss of Saturday's main event, which would've allowed the red-hot Shevchenko a shot at avenging her lone UFC defeat from 2016, furthered the notion that UFC 213 is a cursed card.
While she hasn't reached Rousey's level of fame, Nunes is headlining her third major pay-per-view show in a year, and she seems pleased with the resulting bulges in her paychecks. She decimated Rousey in 48 seconds, landing 27 strikes while absorbing just seven. Valentina is the next step.
"I'm going to be pushing my gameplan constantly and so will he".
There's little reason to doubt her.
Whittaker has had an emergence in recent times and his last win over the unsafe Jacare Souza showed the rest of the division that this Australian can hang with the best in the world, and with Romero now standing in his way, the 27-year-old is on the cusp of achieving something special.
For this title shot, Shevchenko began her training in Thailand before moving to Houston and on to Denver, where she worked with strawweight title contender Rose Namajunas.
Shevchenko on what holes she sees in Nunes' game: "It's not about her". That's where the champion finds herself again; this title defense hovers around a pick 'em, with some books slightly favoring Shevchenko. He is welcoming Gaethje to the UFC in his first fight in the organization. "There's nothing to talk about with that fight".
"Winning the title would mean the world to me but so would simply winning the fight", Whittaker told AAP. "I'm ready for anything after that".
"I'm the kind of fighter that has to keep improving even now that I'm champion", she said. "I will be very strong". "I try to live like people live".
Nunes v Shevchenko 2 TV broadcast will air on BT Sport 2, as well as being available on the BT Sport app.
"I will leave my blood, if I have to I leave my blood and walk away with this belt", Nunes said. "This is such a huge moment for me".
The bout headlines a pay-per-view card that includes a middleweight title bout between Yoel Romero and Whittaker.
