While all of the top 10 most traveled structurally deficient bridges were in California, Midwestern and Eastern states dominated the list of the 10 states with the highest number of structurally deficient bridges.
Being declared "structurally deficient" doesn't mean a bridge is about to fall down.
The association analyzed recently released 2016 data from the National Bridge Inventory from the United States Department of Transportation, which says that nationally, almost 56,000 bridges throughout the country are considered structurally deficient.
ARBTA says deficient bridges are crossed about 185 million times a day. If that's all the improvement that can be gained in 12 months, the group says it would take more than 20 years to improve or replace all of the bridges on the list.
There are 6,700 bridges in New Jersey. "It is outdated, overused, underfunded and in desperate need of modernization".

MI ranks 16th in the nation when it comes to the number of structurally deficient bridges. The ones with the lowest are Washington D.C., Nevada, Delaware, Hawaii and Utah.
The 2017 Bridge report also offers specific information, including rankings of the 250 most heavily travelled structurally deficient bridges in the nation and the 25 most heavily traveled in each state.
