The video was directed by Grant Singer, who directed her earlier video for “Green Light“, but it strikes a very different tone: Where “Green Light” was set in neon-lit city darkness, “Perfect Places” explores a subtropical environs of high grass, waterfalls, and fine dining. But as Lorde spends her days drinking, dancing, and lounging in this setting, she seems mighty lonely.

The singer dropped the video on Thursday (August 3).

The visuals play like a deliberate kiss-off to the blurred nights she describes. “Every night, I live and die, meet somebody, take ’em home”, she sings. In the video, Lorde is alone the whole time, and even when she’s in a place that would usually be filled with people, at her fancy dinner, no one is there. The Lorde depicted in the song is jaded, numb, fed up with a world that offers her little more than fleeting memories.

She promised that the clip included “a couple cute easter eggs” if you can spot them, and best guess? It’s attractive, and the dynamic and anthemic pop track perfectly scores these moments of diverse aesthetic wonder in a way that both the song and visual deserve. Being young isn’t about living with abandon, but making mistakes, embracing difficulty, finding meaning.
