Following his resignation in the wake of Anthony “Mooch” Scaramucci’s appointment as new White House communications director, Sean Spicer appeared with Sean Hannity on Fox News Friday night to discuss his exit – and take a swipe at Melissa McCarthy and “Saturday Night Live” for portraying him in a way he described as “malicious”.
Though Spicer admitted to Hannity that he’s a prankster, that he enjoys a good joke, and that he can laugh at himself, he thought SNL was a little too mean.
Spicer said Friday that he found some of the late-night comedy show skits amusing. “I think “Saturday Night Live” is so far over the top that perhaps, you know, they should give equal time to another opinion”. Spicer said mostly it wasn’t amusing at all; it was silly, malicious or stupid.
Specifically, Spicer talked about Saturday Night Live, where writers delighted in finding ever more absurd ways for guest star Melissa McCarthy to lampoon him. He praised Spicer and even defended him from an editorial calling him a “four-Pinocchio Press Secretary”.
“There are times when it goes from amusing to mean, and there’s a difference when that happens”, he said.
“The president obviously wanted to add to the team, more than anything”, Spicer told Hannity.
While McCarthy’s portrayal of Spicer won critical acclaim, it reportedly hurt the press secretary’s standing with the President. “You have to have thick skin if you’re going to do this”.
SNL marked news of Spicer’s resignation with a tweet, remarking “Spicey out!” with a 44 second compilation video clip of McCarthy spoofing Spicer.
