After three years of delays and billions of dollars of cost overruns, Trump officially turned over the first of the next generation nuclear-powered aircraft carriers to the U.S. Navy at Naval Station Norfolk in the southeastern state of Virginia.
Trump was among a guest list that included Defense Secretary James Mattis, Acting Navy Secretary Sean Stackley, former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and members of Congress.
The Navy said it would cost $43 billion to construct the first three ships in the Ford-class of carriers, including the USS John F. Kennedy, named after the country’s 35th president, and the USS Enterprise. The Ford is also the first aircraft carrier to join the fleet since USS George H.W. Bush in 2009.
Many of these challenges stemmed from the multiple new technologies that the Navy incorporated into her design – including technologies that were not fully developed before they were installed.
Trump spoke Saturday at the official commissioning of the aircraft carrier the USS Gerald Ford at Norfolk, Virginia.
The Navy was granted a waiver as it waited for the USS Gerald Ford to be completed. “We demand victory and we will have total victory, believe me”, Mr. Trump said of the powerful aircraft carrier.
After the speech, he put the Ford into commission and asked God to “bless and guide this warship and all who shall sail in her”.
Ford still must go through various tests and trials of its cutting-edge technology, including new systems to launch and land fighter jets.
