Ready Player One should be taught in schools across America because it’s about video games, virtual reality, pop culture, and Americans getting fat asses.
Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke pose at a photo call for Ready Player One before hitting the stage at the Warner Bros. panel held during 2017 Comic-Con on Saturday (July 22) in San Diego, Calif.
While we don’t get to see Art3mis, Sorrento, or Aech, we do see why this is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year.
Set in 2044, Ready Player One tells the story of teenager Wade Watts, who’d rather escape into the virtual universe “OASIS“, a notoriously unbeatable MMPORG game of pop-culture references and puzzles, than be in the real world.
Ernest Cline’s modern classic Ready Player One is now a film thanks to director Steven Spielberg. There’s also plenty of references to Spielberg’s work, including movies he’s directed and produced.
About the source material’s focus on the future, the filmmaker quipped, “I read the book, and said, ‘They’re going to need a younger director'”. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) finds the first clue and starts a race for the Egg. “It was the most awesome flash forward and flashback at the same time about a decade I was very involved in, the ’80s, and a flash forward to a future that is awaiting all of us, whether we like it or not”, said Spielberg (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The cast includes longtime Spielberg collaborator Mark Rylance, Silicon Valley’s T.J. Miller (sporting an E.T. T-shirt at the panel), Rogue One’s Ben Mendelsohn, Hot Fuzz’s Simon Pegg and Hannah John-Kamen, who played a First Order officer in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Check it out in theaters on March 30th, 2018.
