Zouma signs new Chelsea deal, but joins Stoke on loan

The central defender has signed a new six-year contract with the Blues but is set to spend the next 12 months on loan at the Britannia stadium.

Kurt Zouma is one of the most promising defenders in Europe, but that didn’t help him with injury and then breaking into Antonio Conte’s squad last season, so the player ended up sitting on the bench frustrated for the majority of the season.

Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo told the club’s website: “It is fantastic Kurt has chosen to commit his future to Chelsea“. The club immediately announced his loan to Stoke City for the 2017-2018 season.

The French global was ruled out for almost 9 months and has since struggled to break back into Antonio Conte’s first XI.

The Frenchman has already won two Premier League titles with Chelsea during his time in SW6, making 71 senior appearances so far.

Zouma became one of Chelsea’s most promising defenders during José Mourinho’s second spell at the Stamford Bridge but his expectations to become a regular Chelsea starter collapsed when he picked up a knee injury which had forced him out of the pitch for almost 10 months.

Antonio Conte could not guarantee Zouma regular first football as he continues his rehabilitation but he is nearly certain to be a consistent starter at Stoke, where his new manager Hughes is convinced the youngster ranks among the best defenders in the Premier League.
