The Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners freed Simpson, 70, after more than eight years in prison, allowing him to walk out of the Lovelock Correctional Center as early as October 1.
“I’m sorry it happened, I’m sorry, Nevada”, he said.
On Thursday (Jul 20), after serving nearly nine years in federal prison, O.J. Simpson was granted parole from a Nevada prison.
Simpson and five accomplices held two men at gunpoint in a confrontation over sports memorabilia and personal items, which Simpson claimed had been stolen from him.
“No one really knows how much we have been through, this ordeal the last 9 years… he’s like my best friend and my rock”. “Come on now”, she said.
Simpson also states he took an Alternative to Violence course while in prison, which he called “the most important course anybody in this prison can take, because it teaches you how to deal with conflict through conversation”.
Speaking at the hearing besides Simpson was his oldest daughter Arnelle Simpson.
The same four commissioners already granted Simpson parole on the lesser charges of kidnapping, robbery and burglary in a July 2013 hearing.
Simpson, who plans to move to Florida upon his release, went before the parole board via video conferencing feed from his prison in Lovelock.
O.J. Simpson is once again on the right side of justice. I did my time, I tried to be helpful to everybody. He may be released as early as 1 October.
Associated Press says that the former American footballer player smiled and said “thank you”, as the vote to grant parole was read aloud. Of the six men charged, Simpson is the only one who was still serving a prison sentence.
Simpson’s original prison sentence was scheduled to end on September 29, 2022.
He was found liable for their deaths in a 1997 civil case brought by the victims’ families.
The parole board said he had complied with prison rules during his time in jail, had no prior criminal convictions and posed a minimal risk to the public.
