The 37-year-old sought treatment from numerous specialists before doctors at Bangalore’s Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital recommended a weird procedure to reverse the condition known as “musicians dystonia”.
A techie-turned-musician was suffering from a condition called musician’s dystonia, it is a muscle disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions, cramping three fingers on his left hand.
“The doctor had told be before only that you need to get a guitar in (the) operation theatre, (he said) I need a continuous feedback from you”, Mr Prasad said.
Mr Prasad was given local anaesthetic and says he felt no pain during the surgery.
The man played the guitar to help the doctors locate the troublesome areas in his brain which they “burned” out to correct the movement disorder. His fingers improved magically on during the operation itself.
“At the end of the intervention, my fingers were healed to 100 %, and I could move like before, he added”.
The 32-year-old can be seen strumming a ditty lying on the operating table while surgeons operate and nurses watch on, the Times of India reports. “Before you begin, a special bracket has been secured to his head by four screws inserted deeply in the skull “.
Abhishek Prasad, who was fully awake during the operation, said surgeons asked him to strum his instrument to help them identify problem areas in his brain.
Touted to be the first such brain circuit surgery in the country, the delicate operation involved passing an electrode 8-9cm through a 14mm hole into the brain and stimulating a specific nerve to confirm the right location and prevent any side-effect or complications to other circuits.

“Now my fingers are completely listening to me, earlier my fingers were erect and changing from one chord to other was hard”, he added. “Surgery is the only option to cure it when medicines can’t do”, asserted neurologist CC Sanjiv, who assisted Dr Sharan.
Prasad had stitches removed Thursday in hospital, where he thanked doctors and played a few tunes to demonstrate how well he had recovered.
