Representative Brad Wenstrup held the same opinion about the significance of Scalise’s presence at the event on Wednesday.
He said he saw the gunman holding a semi-automatic rifle in the area behind third base, and that Scalise had been near second base.
The first couple also met with Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, who was wounded in a police shoot-out with the gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson, 66. The suspect, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, from IL, used a M4 assault carbine during the attack, CBS News also confirmed.
Also Wednesday in San Francisco, a man dressed in a UPS uniform and armed with an “assault pistol” opened fire at a United Parcel Service Inc. package sorting hub, killing three people before fatally shooting himself in the head, police said.
Scalise’s position as whip in the Republican-controlled House makes him one of the most senior figures in Congress.
“He entered the room, spoke with Scalise’s family, and sat by his bedside with Mrs Trump”, he said.
Several congressmen at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria praised the Capitol Police officers who engaged Hodgkinson, including two who were injured.
