South Korea, which acquired its first two F-35A jets in March, has agreed with the United States to purchase a total of 40 of the state-of-the-art aircraft by 2021. Animosities have gradually eased since past year when Pyongyang and Washington launched nuclear negotiations, but Seoul has been moving ahead with its already-approved F-35 procurement. The warning on Thursday comes as North Korean and USA officials are expected to resume nuclear negotiations shortly. The North has criticized F-35A as an "invisible lethal weapon".

The South Korean government didn't immediately respond to the North's statement. It was seen as more of a continuation of North Korea's sensitivity to the introduction of sophisticated US weapons on the Korean Peninsula, and dissatisfaction with Seoul since the Vietnam summit's breakdown.
All four countries have sought North Korea's denuclearization in exchange for peace in the region and, since April, their presidents have all had encounters with Kim Jong Un, who was for the first time acting in the same official capacity as them-the latest potential sign he was seeking a more internationally-traditional style of rule. He met Kim three times past year.

Washington had baulked at signing a comprehensive peace treaty before North Korea takes substantial steps towards denuclearisation, but US officials have signalled they may be willing to conclude a more limited agreement to reduce tensions, open liaison offices, and move towards normalising relations.
North Korea has frozen nuclear bomb and long-range missile testing since 2017.
