Zoom out: This was the first time Microsoft broke out Teams stats, but it has said before that the software was its fastest growing business app ever. As a result, it's unlikely there'll be a winner-takes-all market leader; in many cases businesses will use both Slack and Teams for different employees.
Teams combines chat, videoconferencing, voice-over-IP calling and file-access capabilities for end users. The company is no longer going to revoke internal use rights (IURs) for its partners next year, as it announced.
"We are excited to announce that several of our core products are in the process of becoming certified for Microsoft Teams", said Chris Merrick, Director Global Systems Marketing at Shure.
The cause of the Teams service issues was a problematic update, according to a Twitter post by Microsoft.
Slack's stock price had gone down slightly on Thursday as well, though it's hard to tell if that had anything to do with the Microsoft announcement. For IT pros, Microsoft noted that Teams is now available to Office 365 Business and Office 365 ProPlus subscribers, which was announced last month. Teams will get turned on automatically for tenants unless IT pros block it beforehand.
"Even adding Microsoft and Slack's team collaboration user numbers together, it indicates most companies are still not using collaboration software yet", Kurtzman noted.
Another addition, available later this month, is the "Priority notifications" which will ping a recipient every two minutes on their phone or desktop until there's a response. New Announcement messages in Teams chat offer a way to highlight important information such as a new member joining the team, while a channel cross-posting feature lets users quickly post a single message to multiple channels at once.
For frontline workers, Microsoft introduced a feature that allows employees to clock into work and swap shifts.
Teams now also supports messages sent to all people with a particular role.
The company holds its Inspire partner conference in Las Vegas next week. Indeed, partners are seeing increased interest in Teams.
Two years ago this week, we launched Microsoft 365, an integrated set of apps and services created to help customers transform workplace collaboration, streamline business processes, and protect critical information. Microsoft generates more than $120 billion in revenue annually, but Schuster said previously that the rising costs would have required the partner organization to cut back on other key initiatives.
Microsoft Teams provides a complete online meeting solution that includes online meetings, live broadcasts, Microsoft Team Rooms, cloud video interoperability and audio conferencing. It's also partnering on Teams with call recording companies, such as "ASC, NICE and Verint".
