CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating a multistate outbreak of multidrug-resistant Salmonella I 4, , 12:i:- infections linked to contact with pig ear dog treats. Needless to say, after handling pig ears or other pet treats and food, dog owners are advised to always use soap and water to thoroughly wash their hands. However, after interviewing 38 infected people, a CDC report notes 34 of them said they had contact with a dog before falling ill.
Federal health officials are warning about a salmonella outbreak that has been linked to popular dog treats. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. 45 people from 13 states have been affected after making contact with the treats.
Retail locations where sampling occurred have removed pig ears from their shelves, according to CDC.
A common supplier of those treats has not yet been identified. MDARD inspectors also collected samples of other brands of individually wrapped or bagged pig ears being sold at multiple retail locations.
