Opel had a few other electrified models, the Ampera, which was based on the Bolt and the Ampera E derived from the Bolt. Drivers can choose from three modes - normal, eco and sport - which will affect performance, but also battery range, Opel said.
It will have a 136hp electric motor, powered by a 50kWh battery. The Opel Corsa is an absolute bestseller. In Eco mode the Corsa-e becomes a long-distance runner, significantly increasing the range while hardly affecting comfort.
The official announcement comes following a leak of photos of the Corsa-e with Opel badge yesterday, as it will be sold in Europe - both Vauxhall and Opel, previously owned by US-based auto giant General Motors (under which Auistralia's iconic brand Holden also falls), now being owned by French PSA group.
Technologies and assistance systems that are more often found in higher market segments make their debut in the Corsa-e. All the car's systems and the electric drive are adjusted for maximum energy efficiency, without significant detrimental effect on comfort. It charges via a cable that can connect to a wall-box or fast charger. The vehicle will offer a sprightly 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds with 0-31mph achieved in just 2.8 seconds.
United Kingdom carmaker Vauxhall has released official photos and specifications for an all-electric version of its popular Corsa hatchback, that will be known as the Corsa-e and go on sale later this year. It will hit 60mph in 8.1 seconds but, more importantly for an urban runaround, will hit 30mph in just 3.1 seconds.
The Corsa's length is almost unchanged, at 4060mm, but it is 48mm lower, and the driver sits 28mm lower than the current version, Opel said, adding that "handling and dynamics benefit from the lower center of gravity".
Speaking of the interior, there is a new Multimedia Navi infotainment system embedded within the 7.0-inch color touchscreen display, although a bigger 10-inch screen is available if you opt for the Multimedia Navi Pro setup.
The new model will even have an autonomous parking gadget and a panoramic rear-view camera that increases rear visibility by 180 percent (it's able to show approaching traffic from the sides of the car).
These include Traffic Sign Recognition, which detects signs (including LED signs) via the front camera.
