Next-day delivery, which will require a minimum order of $35, will be available in Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Walmart says introducing the feature is a smart business move for the company, because it actually costs less to ship out multiple goods in a single box from a fulfillment center located closest to the customer than to ship out multiple boxes from all over the country.
Walmart has announced that it will be offering free next day shipping for a range of items and that the service will be available without a membership fee.
Walmart will gradually roll out the plan in the coming months. Walmart plans to roll the program out gradually over the coming months and reach roughly 75 percent of the USA population this year, including 40 of the top 50 US cities. Walmart started offering same-day pickup in its stores in 2011 and caught up with Amazon's two-day free shipping two years ago by offering it without a membership fee.
The retailer says it is rolling out the new delivery program in the 2 cities for anyone who spends $35 or more. The analysts said that Amazon's likely goal is same-day delivery for Prime members. "This means the order ships in one box, or as few as possible, and it travels a shorter distance via low-priced ground shipping", he says.
After coyly hinting about a major shift in its shipping policies, Walmart has filed the latest salvo in the retail wars, announcing free one-day shipping starting this week.
Walmart said it is able to offer its NextDay delivery service because it has "built a network of fulfillment assets that are strategically located across the U.S." that allows it to place "the right products in the right fulfillment centers based on where customers are located and what they are ordering". Everything in the cart must be eligible for next day delivery to qualify. We're on track to offer Grocery Pickup from 3,100 stores and same-day Grocery Delivery from 1,600 stores by year-end, which will provide coverage to approximately 80% and 50% of the USA population, respectively. "That's in contrast to online orders that come in multiple boxes from multiple locations, which can be quite costly". Cut-off times vary by location. The free offer to consumers keeps Walmart "in the game" against online rival Amazon.com, Inc.
Walmart only launched its two-day shipping service in January 2017.
