Group to examine impact of body image on young people’s mental health

Survey data show 10% of women saying they have self-harmed or have deliberately hurt themselves due to their body image, compared to 4% of men. We are striving for a society where people do not suffer because of concerns about body image, and where they do not feel pressured to live up to a false sense of perfection.

It was also clear that body image issues affect people throughout their lives.

And Denise Spence, Chief Executive of Girlguiding Scotland said: "This is a great chance for our members to share how negative body image is impacting the mental health of girls and young women in Scotland, and how the new advisory group will work to help improve support for young people".

The poll - which the charity commissioned from YouGov - asked more than 1,000 Scottish adults about their views on body image.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and business insurance specialist QBE has released the findings of its survey aimed at highlighting the impact of mental health support - or the lack of it - in the workplace. Our research suggests that a worrying proportion of men have felt anxious or depressed about their bodies. The charity wants tough reforms to the social media and advertising linked by critics to body image problems.

To mark the start of Mental Health Awareness week, we take a look a closer look at why negative body image is affecting more people from a younger age.

He added: "For some people this is potentially very severe, with large numbers saying they have self-harmed or had suicidal thoughts and feelings". While there have been some positive initiatives, social media companies have frequently been unwilling to take the necessary steps to protect their users from harmful content.

Over six months it will create a charter pledge on healthy body image as well as attempt to define what body image means.

Ovo Spaces promote a culture of wellbeing with their team and recognised the need to address not only physical first aid - all their site operatives and four of their internal staff are qualified in this - but mental first aid too.

Ms Cameron said: "This could be enforced by the proposed new independent regulator, which is already part of the Government proposals".
