A film that seeks explanations and provides answers without glossing over things, the name Michael Schumacher still electrifies people all over the world.
The film, filmed with unpublished archives and statements by his father, his wife and his children, will be released on December 5th.
"It will show him as a remorseless and daring Formula 1 driver, the ambitious sportsman, the accomplished mechanic with a unique technical flair, the reliable team player and the loving family man", they said.
This is the first documentary about the star that is officially backed by his family.
However, in November 2014, former racing driver and friend of Schumacher Philippe Streiff told a French radio station that the German star was "paralysed and in a wheelchair". His family, loyalty and friendship were always more important to him than prominence, money and the worldwide attention that the racing circus brings with it.
Filmmaker Wech has made documentaries about figures including politicians Gerhard Schröder and Marine Le Pen.
Rocket Science is the film's executive producer and will handle global sales set to begin at this year's Cannes film festival. Kammertöns is the senior editor of Hamburg weekly newspaper Die Zeit and has worked on TV documentaries for ARD and Arte.
The work will be the first of its kind ever produced on the seven-time F1 champion and will celebrate Schumacher's 50th birthday as well as the 25th anniversary of his first world championship title.
Sabine Kehm, speaking for Schumacher's family, said his "outstanding career deserves to be celebrated". "We are happy this film will be in the hands of such ambitious and sensitive professionals".
"It is time for a film", producer Vanessa Nocker.
"We are thrilled to have the trusting co-operation of Michael Schumacher's family and management. But of course we're very aware of the responsibility that comes with it".
