The Instagram posts in question have since been deleted, but E! reports that they featured Ariana carrying a see-through bag with the word "Sweetener" written on it.
She posted them to her account on August 17 past year, the day the album was released, with the caption: "Happy sweetener day".
The court documents state that the initial Instagram post garnered 3,392,079 likes.
Ariana Grande's now-deleted Instagram post, submitted as evidence.
Grande is the most followed woman on Instagram, with 154 million followers.
Barbera is suing for the profits that Grande earned from the post, or $25,000 in damages for each of the two photos.
