Pyongyang Accuses US of Violating Deal After North Korean Cargo Ship's Seizure

"The latest U.S. act constitutes an extension of the American method of calculation for bringing the DPRK to its knees by means of "maximum pressure" and an outright denial of the underlying spirit of the June 12 DPRK-U.S".

North Korea on Tuesday demanded the US returned a cargo ship used to transport that was seized in violation of worldwide sanctions against the rogue regime, calling it a "robbery".

Relations between the two nations had initially thawed following a summit agreement between Trump and Kim Jong Un on June 12 a year ago.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump expressed their commitment for the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula at their first bilateral meeting in Singapore last June. The vessel was originally seized in Indonesia a year ago for allegedly circumventing UN-imposed sanctions on shipping coal.

The United States announced last week it had seized the Wise Honest, which was originally detained in April 2018 by Indonesian authorities.

'The US must realise the outcome of its gangster-like actions. and must return our ship without delay, ' the statement added.

The announcement of the USA seizure of the vessel came as tensions rose over Pyongyang's test launches of short-range missiles last week.

Undated photo released by the U.S. Justice Dept. on May 9, 2019 shows the North Korean cargo ship "Wise Honest".

The announcement of the USA seizure of the vessel came as tensions rose over Pyongyang's test launches of short-range missiles last week.

Lifting of some of the measures was a key demand at a second Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi in February that ultimately broke down without a deal.

While Pyongyang has been seeking the lifting of the global sanctions, imposed on it due to North Korea's repeated weapons and nuclear tests, Washington has been insisting that Pyongyang should abandon its nuclear program.

The ship arrived this week at the port of Pago Pago in the US territory of American Samoa. Experts believe coal and other mineral exports help finance the North's weapons industry.
