In 2005, its spin-off show Postcards from Buster featured a lesbian couple in the episode "Sugar Time". Clearly, Arthur remains on-the-ball where social issues are concerned, and it will be curious to see whether they continue to pursue the avenue of gay rights in subsequent episodes. Arthur and his friends Buster, Francine, and Muffy think Mr. Ratburn will be marrying a stern woman named Patty (special guest star Jane Lynch, "Glee"), and try to stop the wedding, anxious that their teacher will become even stricter.
Arthur and his friends show up to the wedding ready to object to it - only to see Mr. Ratburn walk down the aisle with his groom. That cheery children's show that you watched back in the day at 3pm on ABC when you got home from school? They decide that marrying her will make Mr. Ratburn miserable, which will then make his students miserable, so they set off to nip the nuptials in the bud.
But the kids chicken out when they get to the wedding and don't stand up to object to the marriage.
In a plot twist, the woman Mr. Ratburn was having lunch with turns out to be his sister-played by Lynch.
Arthur debuted in 1996 and featured Mr. Ratburn in its debut episode, Arthur's Eyes.
Later in the episode characters Muffy, Arthur and Buster discussed the wedding and seeing their teacher happy with his new husband. Some Twitter users wrote that they hope other TV shows and movies include LGBTQ characters and storylines.
