Verizon will launch its first mobile 5G service in "select areas" of Chicago and Minneapolis on April 11. T-Mobile US Inc. has also promised mobile 5G service to start in 30 cities this year, with more comprehensive coverage coming next year.
Verizon's 5G service plan comes with unlimited data, available for $10 a month (with the first three months free) with any Verizon unlimited plan, including Verizon Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited or Above Unlimited plans.
How much will Verizon 5G service cost?
If you're a Verizon customer, do you have any intent on buying a 5G-capable phone this year? Of course, you'll need a compatible phone and there are none at this point.
To start the Moto Z3 with a 5G Moto Mod attached is the only device that can connect to Verizon's 5G network. If you have an older Verizon plan and refuse to switch, you won't have access to 5G. The offer is available only on unlimited plans, which now start at $75 for one person or $160 for a family of four without 5G.
For a limited time, customers can preorder the 5G moto mod, which retails for $349.99, for just $50. For Minneapolis, you are looking at 5G in Downtown West, Downtown East, and Elliot Park. The company's mobile implementation, and all future Verizon 5G services, will use the NR standard from the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Sprint hasn't announced 5G prices.
"We can tell you that 5G Moto Mod users will experience ultra-fast speeds, be able to download and stream movies in seconds, and, due to 5G's low latency, they'll be able to video conference and collaborate remotely in near real-time", Verizon told Ars, when asked for specific speed and latency numbers.
You should also know that Moto Mods are obviously only compatible with Motorola devices like the Moto Z3.
Verizon is also planning to sell the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, but there's no availability date yet.
In Chicago and Minneapolis, the rollout will start on a small scale.
