Google Allo shuts down today. Here's how to save your chats

The mobile messaging service was hotly anticipated when it came out in 2016, but the slow addition of features and oversaturation of the messaging ecosystem doomed the app.

If you've been relying on Allo, it's time to swing your Plan B into operation and to download your chat history.

Allo will continue to work through March 2019 and until then, you'll be able to export all of your existing conversation history from the app-here are instructions on how to do so. We will forever remember March 12 as the day Allo died.

Your messages will be in a CSV file.

Allo used phone numbers as a login, similar to WhatsApp.

Google never really made the case for why people should move to Allo, and consumers the world over didn't sit around waiting for it.

If I'm honest, I barely ran the app after it was released, except for looking in on periodic updates - and they were few and far between. It didn't technically kill Allo at that time, but it "paused" investment.

Google Allo isn't the only Google service that it is being discontinued this month.

Today, Google is culling one of those apps.

To download your chats, Go to Settings and then tap on Chat. Exporting media will save photos, videos and other files. The media exports are saved in a ZIP file.

Hangouts was launched as a replacement for Gchat in 2013.Google Hangouts is a communication platform developed by the company which includes messaging, video chat, SMS and Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) features.

"Export media" lets you drag down all your photos, videos and other data.
