A Spotify spokesperson also stated in August that it already has numerous mechanisms in place to detect and combat ad blocking.
New guidelines published by the company advise that "circumventing or blocking advertisements in the Spotify Service, or creating and distributing tools designed to block advertisements in the Spotify Service" may now result in "immediate termination or suspension of your Spotify account".
Spotify had begun cracking down on freeloaders much earlier, though.
Reports have recently shown that around two million free Spotify users are using some sort of ad blocker to block the ads from Spotify. Any account with suspicious or abnormal activity on this front will be red flagged.

The platform sent emails to users with unusual activity to uninstall the ad-blocking software, but if they declined, Spotify terminated the accounts. The company is reportedly in talks to acquire podcast network Gimlet Media, which includes podcasts such as Reply All and Homecoming, in an attempt to bolster the podcasting element of its service.
